The woman hails from Telangana and works as a freelance researcher. She completed an internship with the United Nations (UN) in 2023. Investigators suspect she used artificial intelligence (AI) tools, including ChatGPT and Claude, to prepare papers on sensitive security issues for people posing as academicians. Officials suspect she shared the material through encrypted online channels. Police have booked her under the Official Secrets Act and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). However, she remains unarrested. Probe follows interception at Jammu railway station A joint team, including personnel from a central intelligence agency, intercepted the woman at Jammu railway station on October 14. She was reportedly preparing to board a train to Pathankot. The team took her to a nearby military station for questioning, officials said. Police later registered a case at Gandhi Nagar police station in Jammu. The case includes charges relating to criminal conspiracy and offences against national sovereignty. A deputy superintendent of police (DSP) leading the probe questioned her and seized her mobile phone. Investigators extracted data that reportedly contained documents on sensitive subjects. During questioning, the woman said she relied entirely on open-source research and AI platforms to prepare the material, officials said. Telangana woman allegedly maintained contact with foreign nationals The woman married the Army officer, who holds the rank of major, in 2023. She completed a course in international governance in Geneva in 2022. She also earned a master's degree from a Bengaluru university in 2021. Investigators found that she had interacted with several foreign nationals during her UN internship. These contacts reportedly included a Chinese national. Officials said she continued communicating with that person through WhatsApp. In 2024, she also interacted on social media with a Malaysian consultant suspected of working for Chinese intelligence agencies, officials added. Investigators examine alleged shift towards defence research Preliminary findings suggest the alleged contacts initially asked the woman to write articles on environmental and geopolitical issues. They later encouraged her to explore defence-related subjects, officials said. Investigators suspect she may have fallen into what they described as an “intellectual trap”. They believe the people who approached her as academicians may have been intelligence operatives seeking sensitive information. Police are examining whether she systematically shared information under the guise of freelance research. Investigators are also conducting forensic examinations of her digital devices and reviewing her financial transactions. These checks aim to establish the nature and extent of the material she allegedly shared. The allegations remain under investigation. Police have not arrested the woman, and investigators have yet to complete their assessment of the material recovered from her devices. ]]>
